COGNITION, STRESS, AND ALCOHOL TRACKING
(COAST)

Thank you for your interest in COAST! We hope the additional information below will help you decide whether you want to anticipate in the study.

The study name COAST describes the types of measures that we collect: “CO” stands for cognition or brain function, “A” stands for alcohol consumption, “S” stands for stress response, and “T” stands for tracking measures over time. Using these measures, COAST aims to understand how day-to-day changes in stress response and brain function impact alcohol consumption.

This study is 5 weeks long but only requires you to attend 3 in-person visits during this time. All other measures are completed remotely using your phone and study-issued devices.

COAST Consists of 4 Phases

Phase 1:
Enrollment

Should the screening survey indicate that you are potentially eligible for the study, you will be prompted to schedule a Zoom visit with study staff. During this visit, study staff will ask you questions about your health and alcohol consumption to determine if you are eligible for the study. The visit will take 1-2 hours to complete.

Phase 2:
In-Person

If eligible, you will then attend two in-person visits at our clinic during the first week of the study (Week 1). At the in-person visits, you will complete measures related to stress response, brain function, and alcohol consumption using surveys, saliva samples, a wrist sensor, and a breathalyzer. Each visit will take 3-4 hours to complete.

Phase 3:
Remote

During Weeks 2-5, participants will use their phone and study-issued devices (wrist sensor, breathalyzer) to complete brief measures 3 times a day for 28 days. Measures include surveys, a brief brain puzzle, wearing the wrist sensor to assess stress, and providing breathalyzer samples to assess drinking. It will take less than 30 minutes a day to complete all measures.

Phase 4:
Return

At the end of the study, you will attend one last in-person visit to retune study-issued devices and fill out a brief feedback form. This in-person visit will take 30 minutes or less to complete.

The final amount earned (up to $300) depends on the number of measures you complete and the return of study materials. For Phase 1-2 and 4, compensation will be administered after the completion of each visit. For Phase 3, compensation will be earned daily but administered weekly. Compensation will be provided in the form of electronic gift cards that can be spent at a variety of stores

If interested in participating, please complete the screening survey:
